Friday 15th October
SHWMAE PAWB! It’s been a great way to end the week with today’s Shwmae day. The school has been full of Welsh colours, Welsh music and loads of fun linked to the wonderful country that we live in.
There have been loads of other highlights during another busy week! The Nursery had a great adventure on Welly Wednesday, going on a bear hunt. They splashed in the water, squelched in the mud, climbed over tree stumps and even went through a snowstorm. The bear now lives in the classroom! They were also very excited to decorate their own biscuits and take them home. This week, Reception have been learning through the story of Cinderella. They have loved making glass slippers by matching the correct number of gems to the slipper, decorating pumpkins, slippers and dresses and thinking about what may have happened to the stepsisters at the end of the story. They ended the week with a fantastic show of Welsh colours for Shwmae day and created ‘Croeso’ posters for their classroom door.
Miss Tyrrell’s class were very proud to show their autumn treasure collections to the class and they have loved looking at them more closely through magnifying glasses, thinking of some tremendous wow words for their autumn poems. There were also some magnificient shades of autumn colours created by the children when colour mixing.
Mrs Horseman and Mrs Tucker’s class are all really enjoying exploring their new mini topic of Autumn and Harvest. They have been writing lovely autumn poems using wow words and have enjoyed talking about all the lovely autumn objects they have found. They loved using conkers to add and subtract and to count in groups of 2, 5 and 10 and are also enjoying making people and animals using leaves!
Following inspiration from Andy Goldsworthy, Year 3’s highlight this week has been using natural resources to create pirate art outdoors. They have also thoroughly enjoyed exploring magnetism and looking at its use in early navigation at sea. It’s been the turn of the ‘Rhymney Giant’ in year 4 this week with some wonderful story writing. Giant Ritta left the children with a challenge to investigate and the children thoroughly enjoyed finding out the best way to keep his drink warm.
What a week Year 5 and 6 have had! They researched the children of King Henry VIII to decide who should succeed him as part of our ‘Coronation of a Child’ fortnight. Children will be singing two Tudor songs at our banquet next week that Ms Nicholls from Gowerton School has taught them. For Black History month, they have found out about Black women leaders and created fact file posters. Other highlights have been learning about division in maths, creating new Tudor dances, carrying out a rock scratch test in Science and painting our class Tapestry ready for the banquet. To celebrate Shwmae day, we enjoyed learning about the emblems of Wales. However, the most exciting thing to happen in Ms Williams’ class was the arrival of their new interactive whiteboard!
Parent Consultations and Christmas concert
Parents and carers will have the opportunity to arrange a phone consultation with their child’s teacher during the week beginning November 8th. Booking details will be sent out the week beginning November 1st.
As we move through the term, schools across Swansea are seeing an increased numbers of Covid cases. The framework we follow as schools does not allow for large gatherings of people. Therefore, it has been agreed as a North Gower Partnership (Gowerton Comprehensive and cluster Primary Schools) that whilst Swansea is placed in the High Risk category, we will move towards a virtual Christmas concert this year. Once again, we thank you for your support as we continue to work together as a whole school community.
Flu vaccinations
We’ve received some queries regarding flu vaccinations for children. These will be offered after half term with a letter being sent out the first week back!
CongratulationsA huge congratulations to our very own Mrs Cornish for completing her 5o mile cycle challenge, from Cardiff to Swansea in aid of Velindre and South West Wales Cancer Centres, alongside famous rugby player Jonathan ‘Jiffy’ Davies. Awesome effort Mrs C!
